week two of thankful november

thursday, november 8, 2012: today i'm thankful for this amazing part of the country i live in. (and i don't live on tornado alley or along the coast where a hurricane can get me. i've been following superstorm Sandy and it's heartbreaking!) the idaho/utah area is gorgeous all four seasons of the year. right now the autumn colors and falling leaves are beautiful. the weather is crisp and fresh. i am so grateful to live among mountains and valleys and forests and farmlands. i have lived in vegas now for two summers and it's just not the same. where i'm used to green, there is all beige. and where i'm used to hot afternoons and cool evenings, there is only heat 24/7. and i loved my experiences there, but it always feels good to be back where i grew up.
friday, november 9, 2012: this is so repetitive... but i'm grateful for FRIDAYS! i'm on campus. i just finished an hour and a half test. i just turned in multiple assignments. and i have to go "capture" my PE teaching moment that didn't go so well... i'm just grateful it's friday and it's my freakin' weekend!
....... (just kidding) the following was added later:
today i am most definitely grateful for my mother and grandmother's medical skills. drake and i went home this weekend and fortunately, we stayed friday night at my parents house because... at 2 AM i was awakened by a terrible shooting pain on the back of my left side. it was extremely painful, persistant, and focused. drake woke up to me flopping back and forth trying to find a comfortable position that might stop the pain... but eventually, i got the urge to puke. up the stairs i ran at full speed with drake on my heels. after several minutes of pain, i asked him to get my mom. when she finally appeared, her first diagnosis was that i had a muscle spasm. that actually made sense to me because it felt very sharp and it could be on a muscle. but no amount of massaging or heated pads was easing the pain, and it wasn't going away. my dad started demanding we go to the ER. but if i just had a muscle spasm, there was no way i wanted to be there. but i remembered when my dear friend, jaimee jo thompson (now bauman) had had kidney stones at the downey fair. it was sharp pain on one side too... so my mom agreed it was possible, and drake said if we were going to be up all night, we might as well go to the ER... so we decided to go. only now, every time i stood up, i was vomiting all over. so after i threw up on the front lawn, drake carried me to the suburban, laid me down and covered me up with every blanket he could find. and we were off. my grandma kris was in the american falls ER and since i was feeling okay, we drove right passed pocatello. i preferred that because i got special treatment from my grandma!! (whoop whoop) although, i did have to stand up again, and pee in a cup, and that only resulted in more puking. the lab came back and sure enough, i had kidney stones. awesome. so i got hooked up to an iv and fluids started getting pumped into me after two shots in the butt. one shot was supposed to be for pain, but it didn't seem to work much. i still had to endure the passing of a kidney stone. eventually,  i got to go home, and my mom was able to keep me hooked up to an iv all night long while i slept next to drake. i had a few more painful minutes, but i eventually crashed.
my sweetheart during the drive to idaho. i love that guy!
saturday, november 10, 2012: i can't help it, i have to dedicate another day to drake. what would i do without him?! when i woke up on saturday morning feeling better, i decided i could go to the funeral we had been planning on going to. i got up, showered, got ready, and felt fine. we stopped and got breakfast at the flying j and then continued to the funeral. my face was extremely puffy and swollen because of all the fluid that had been pumped into me, and my wonderful mother-in-law asked "what happened? oh, you got your wisdom teeth out?" hahaha. no, actually. but then after standing in the line at the funeral, i could feel it coming again. i had to rush out of the services to the bathroom where i collapsed on the floor in pain. again, drake was right behind me doing what he could while i writhed on the floor with pains. and of course, eventually i had to puke. i grabbed the closest garbage, opened the lid, and started vomiting before i even realized there was no liner. eeewww. so i jumped up and started puking into the sink. everything i had eaten that morning that had not digested. gross. and it wasn't draining either. then, after i was done with that, i laid back down on the floor and watched in amazement as drake disappeared for a bit, coming back with gloves on his hands and the mop bucket full of soap. he mopped up everything in that garbage can. then cleaned out the sink. it took a lot of work, and i'm sure it was disgusting. that is why i have to dedicate another day to how grateful i am for drake. he took the sweetest care of me. when he was finally finished cleaning, he laid down next to me and smiled as i apologized for the disgusting work he had just done for me. but what a sweet husband, right? i love him so much! i am so grateful for him and his love for me. every day continues to get better.

tender mercies and blessings during kidney stones:
i was in idaho, at my house, where my mother was able to take care of me (vs. being in provo. the ER would have been a lot more terrifying if it was just drake and i!)
it was on a weekend so i didn't miss any school or get behind in my classes
my grandma was working in the ER
my mom can keep me hooked on an IV at home so i didn't have to stay all night in the ER
drake was the sweetest husband. ever. i felt so loved! and what a great daddy, right?!
sunday, november 11, 2012: today i am especially grateful for the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. it is hard work and a great sacrifice to leave their own desires behind for two years. we spent this sunday with kory kay, our good friend from high school, as he gave his mission report returning from mexico. he looked so great! drake literally ran to the foyer of the high school performing arts center to attack him with a huge hug... that just doesn't happen very often with drake. he looked and sounded great, of course, and definitely had that missionary glow. while drake was away during his mission, my testimony of missionary service really increased. i am anxiously looking forward to one day when drake and i will serve together!

monday, november 12, 2012: this day i'm grateful for brigham young university. i love this university and campus with my entire heart. i love the spirit i feel in classes, i love learning how to be an educator entwined with gospel doctrines, and i love the pleasant weather even in november! byu has become so near and dear to my heart, i will be heartbroken when the time comes for me to move on to other chapters of my life. byu uplifts me, inspires me, and challenges me to be better every single day. i shudder to think of where my life would be without the influence of this amazing place.

tuesday, november 13, 2012: i am also especially grateful for the jobs drake and i have to support ourselves. i have worked the same job at the creamery since my first semester at byu in 2010. basically i run a register, flip burgers, and scoop ice cream. it sounds kinda crappy, but the people are always fun and the environment is pretty relaxed. i have made a lot of good friends since working there and there's really not much room to complain. especially when holidays come around and i get awesome days off. drake has also been blessed in being able to get jobs wherever we go. while we were in vegas drake had to look for a job for over a week and applied online to new jobs multiple times a day. the first application he submitted in provo equalled a job. bam! just like that making $11.50 an hour and working full-time hours. it has been such a blessing not worrying as much about how we're going to pay rent. i am so relieved to not have to scrounge around for every penny. our lives should never focus on money, but it is necessary in life, and our jobs are huge blessings.
wednesday, november 14, 2012: what would i do without wendesdays? and all the time between noon and four to clean, clean, clean! sometimes this tiny apartment gets a little cluttered, the dishes get piled up, and clothes get scattered. three days of the week i work until 7 and i never want to clean after then, so wednesday afternoons are precious to my life. i am so grateful!
thursday, november 15, 2012: today i am grateful for prayer. i am grateful for there to be a way for me to communicate with my Father in Heaven. how could i live without that power? i couldn't make any important decisions or face this ugly world without prayer. i am grateful at how it brings me and my husband closer together when we pray every night together and how it helps us remember our blessings, and also to think of others. i am also grateful for the answers to prayers i've received in the past. i have truly tried to pattern my life after prayer and personal revelation to make all the big decisions i've had to face, and i believe with my whole heart that is one of the biggest reasons i am so happy right now!
